Beautiful Beach

Mount Maunganui is by the far the best known of all beaches in the Bay of Plenty. Located 5 kilometres north of Tauranga on the east coast, the Mount's main beach is approximately 700 metres long and 50 metres wide. It's white and sandy, with rocky headlands at the north-western end where the Mount itself is located.

The Mount is one of New Zealand's best loved holiday destinations and during the Christmas holiday season, the population explodes almost tenfold. Many international lifesaving and triathlon competitions are held here, along with surfing, beach volleyball and boat racing events.

Surfers really love this beach as there are many great spots to choose from. Over the summer periods, strong tropical swells often make surfing conditions ideal and with a quick boat trip across the harbour entrance, surfers can indulge in world quality waves off Matakana Island.

Mount Maunganui will also soon be the home of New Zealand's first artificial surfing reef,as in the last few years, a lot of time and effort has been put towards the Mount Reef Project. When this surfing reef is completed, itwill make surfing at the Mount even more popular.

For families, Pilot Bay on the other side of the Mount offers a great swimming and an excellent environment for windsurfing or kayaking. Mount Maunganui's main beach is patrolled in the summertime by members of the Bay of Plenty Surf Life Saving Association and voluntary lifeguard patrols are present from October through to March each year.

The main beach is a beautiful place all year around. You will notice that thesky and the ocean look absolutely magnificent when the sun goes down on a nice autumn day. This is a perfectplace to go for a relaxing walk, no matter what the temperature is.
